It can cause embolic stroke (blockage of blood vessel of brain due to a blood clot carried there by blood circulation) rarely, especially if it is associated with a patent foramen ovale (an opening in the middle of the atrial septum, which normally closes off after birth). Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a cause for paradoxical embolism (blood clot from the right side of the heart reaching blood vessels supplied by the left side of the heart).
