Think of it as a &#8220;percentage of efficiency&#8221; rather than a total volume. Even a healthy heart doesn&#8217;t empty completely with every beat; there is always some blood left behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Calculation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The formula for EF is the ratio of blood pumped out to the total amount of blood that was in the chamber before it squeezed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EF = (Stroke Volume\/End-Diastolic Volume) x 100<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>End-Diastolic Volume (EDV):<\/strong> The amount of blood in the ventricle just before it contracts (when it&#8217;s &#8220;full&#8221;).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Stroke Volume (SV):<\/strong> The amount of blood actually pushed out into the body during the beat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the Numbers Mean<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In clinical practice, we categorize EF into ranges to determine how well the heart muscle is functioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><td><strong>EF Percentage<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Classification<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>What it means<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>50% \u2013 75%<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Normal<\/strong><\/td><td>The heart is pumping a healthy amount of blood.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>40% \u2013 49%<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Slightly Reduced<\/strong><\/td><td>There may be early signs of heart muscle weakness.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Below 40%<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Reduced<\/strong><\/td><td>This often indicates Heart Failure (HFrEF) or cardiomyopathy.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Above 75%<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Hyperdynamic<\/strong><\/td><td>Can be seen in conditions like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or severe anemia.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why It Matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EF is one of the most important tools for diagnosing and monitoring heart disease. It helps clinicians decide on treatments, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Starting specific heart failure medications.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Determining if a patient needs an implantable defibrillator (ICD).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Assessing the risk before a patient undergoes major surgery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Common Misconception<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A &#8220;normal&#8221; EF doesn&#8217;t always mean the heart is perfect.<\/strong> There is a condition called <strong>HFpEF<\/strong> (Heart Failure with <em>Preserved<\/em> Ejection Fraction).
