How To Grow African Coriander: Step-by-Step

African Coriander, also known as Mexican coriander and sawtooth coriander, is cultivated worldwide and is used as culinary herb. It has a much stronger flavour than the usual coriander which is known as cilantro in some regions. If you just handle the leaves, you get the pleasant odour. The name saw tooth coriander is because of the serrations of leaves.

I have been growing African coriander from saplings brought from elsewhere. This one has been planted in a garden pot. I have grown African coriander on ground soil as well. When the growth is luxurious there will be plenty of sprouts on the sides which be taken out cautiously and replanted without damage to the roots to get a new plant.

This plant is growing on ground soil and not in a garden pot. It is on the way to produce a flower bunch. Some say that flower bunches should be removed to favour vegetative growth of the plant with more leaves. But what I have found is that when a flower bunch is removed another one appears soon on the side. The leaves are very useful for culinary purpose and needs only much smaller amount compared to cilantro to give flavour to your curries.
