Indian Mint or Mexican Mint?
|This plant is known by several names like Indian Mint, Mexican Mint, Soup Mint and many more. It brings nostalgic memories of childhood as my mother used to grow it at home as a home remedy for common cold, to be used for steam inhalation. It has a pungent aroma and is supposed to have a mint like flavour, though I have not tasted it recently. Currently I am growing this plant for nostalgic memories of my childhood rather than for any medicinal value. I love to see the nice leaves and enjoy the aroma when I go near the plant. Some do grow it as an ornamental plant.
The plant can be easily propagated by stem cuttings and can be grown as an indoor plant as well. The essential oil of this plant has plenty of organic compounds like carvacrol and thymol. Came across the picture of a variety with variegated leaves online, though I have not seen such plant any time in my life.
This plant has been growing rather fast with plenty of new branches coming up from the sides. You can also see a small Okra plant beside it. As the Indian Mint plant is growing fast, I may have to shift the Okra plant to another garden pot. Otherwise it will not have enough space to grow in this small garden pot, which I presume will soon be filled by the Indian Mint plant.
