Money Plant in Aquarium!
|In my earlier post on Money Plant I had mentioned that some grow it in aquarium to absorb the nitrates produced by bacterial action on fish waste. Now I have started experimenting with Money Plant growth in aquariums. One in which goldfish are being grown and another smaller one in which there were goldfish earlier. A third one is a tarpaulin tank of five feet diameter in which other bigger fish are being grown. In this aquarium without goldfish, the Money Plant has been placed near the aerator, with part of the plant submerged and part of it above the water level. I am providing lighting to improve photosynthesis in this indoor aquarium which is in a partly shaded area.
This Money Plant has been placed in a larger aquarium with goldfish. In this aquarium as there are goldfish, I presume that the Money Plant will be useful in absorbing nitrates. I have not placed other plants because I am fed up of purchasing water plants and each time the goldfish would finish them off in a few days. I am not sure whether they will start nibbling at the Money Plant as well. My only hope is that they may not be familiar with the taste of Money Plant as it is not a usual aquarium plant and might leave it alone. Only time will tell.
Next one is in the tarpaulin tank in which other fish are growing. I have kept two white garden pots with holes at the bottom floating in the water for growing hydrilla. If I keep the hydrilla in the main tank, fish will either eat them up or at least damage them by cutting them into pieces. That is why I have kept the hydrilla isolated in garden pots. Water can easily flow from the tank to the garden pots and back and I hope that this will help in absorbing nitrates. The Money Plant placed in this tank has a few roots which are in one garden pot, and part of the plant above water is over the second garden pot. The Money Plants have been in the current status for a few days. Shall be posting updates on what happens to them later. As I do not have a kit to check the nitrate level of aquarium water, I have not done that. I do change water whenever it gets turbid and clear the aquarium walls of algal growth.
