Hot Chilli &amp; Garlic Spray<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Capsaicin (the compound that makes chillies spicy) is a severe irritant to rodents&#8217; noses and eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Mix:<\/strong> Boil 2 tablespoons of red chilli powder (or crushed hot dry chillies) and a whole bulb of crushed garlic in a liter of water for about 10 minutes. Let it steep until cool, then strain the liquid. Add 3\u20134 drops of dish soap to help the spray adhere to surfaces.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Application:<\/strong> Spray liberally on the outside of your grow bags or pots, along the terrace walls, and on the floor around the plants. You can spray it on the lower leaves of the vegetables, but test a single leaf first to ensure the mixture isn&#8217;t so strong that it burns the plant. Reapply after any rain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Camphor (Karpooram) &amp; Aromatic Oils<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mice and rats despise overwhelming, sharp scents that mask the smell of their food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Scatter crushed camphor tablets around the corners of the terrace and in the spaces between your plant containers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alternatively, soak cotton balls in strong peppermint oil or eucalyptus oil and wedge them around the base of the most frequently attacked plants. Replace the cotton balls every few days as the scent evaporates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Crushed Eggshells<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because rodents have very delicate paws, they naturally avoid walking on sharp, abrasive surfaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wash, dry, and coarsely crush eggshells (do not grind them into a fine powder\u2014you want sharp edges).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sprinkle a thick, prickly ring of shells over the topsoil in your containers. As a bonus, this will also deter slugs and slowly add calcium to the soil as you water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Terrace Setup Tweaks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Elevate your containers:<\/strong> Rodents love to nest and hide in the warm, dark, narrow spaces directly underneath pots and grow bags sitting flush against the terrace floor. Elevating your containers on bricks or open metal stands eliminates their safe harbor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Secure your compost:<\/strong> If you keep a compost bin on the terrace, ensure it has a heavy, tightly locking lid.
