The thickening on the stem of your bitter gourd is an elongated gall caused by the Stem Gall Midge (Lasioptera falcata or Lasioptera bryoniae). The adult fly lays eggs on the plant, and the resulting maggots bore into the stem to feed. As they feed inside the tissues, the plant forms these thick, cylindrical galls between the nodes. This internal damage disrupts sap flow, arresting further growth of the shoots and causing overall stunting of the vine.
Since the maggots are protected inside the swollen stem, surface insecticides are ineffective. Similar to managing leaf miner outbreaks in broad beans, physically removing the infested tissue is the most reliable approach.
Here is how to manage the infestation:
- Prune the infected stems: Use clean, sharp shears to cut off the vine a few inches below the lowest visible swelling.
- Verification: If you carefully slice the thickened portion of the pruned stem open lengthwise, you will likely find the small, legless maggots (often yellowish-white or orange) feeding inside.
- Destroy the infected material: Do not leave the pruned stems in your container garden or add them to your compost, as the pests can finish their life cycle in plant debris and re-emerge. Seal them in a bag and dispose of them in the household trash.
- Inspect the remaining plant: Carefully check the rest of the vine, as these galls can also form on leaf petioles and developing fruits. Prune off any additional swellings you find.
- Clear plant debris: Clean up any fallen leaves or decaying crop debris around the base of the plant to eliminate resting places where the insects might pupate.
