Cardiac CT – Left coronary artery

Cardiac CT – Left coronary artery: Cardiac CT scan at the level of the aortic sinuses, showing the left main coronary artery (LMCA) and its two branches. LAD: Left anterior descending coronary artery; LCX: Left circumflex coronary artery. Ao: Aorta. LAD courses down in the groove between the right and left ventricles on the anterior surface of the heart. LCX turns backwards in the atrioventricular groove between the left atrium and left ventricle.

In addition to this two dimensional image cardiac CT images can be used to reconstruct 3 dimensional (3D) anatomy of the coronary tree. 3D reconstructions will give a better perspective of the coronary tree to the onlooker and can even be appreciated by lay persons.

Cardiac CT is mostly used as a screening test for proximal coronary artery disease. If significant disease is detected, it is followed up with conventional coronary angiogram.
