Cardiology MCQ – Least progression of valvular lesion – Answer

Which of these three lesions is least likely to progressive and have a favourable clinical course among aortic stenosis, mitral regurgitation and aortic regurgitation?

Correct Answer: 1. Aortic regurgitation

Asymptomatic severe aortic stenosis and mitral regurgitation has poor long term outcome with overall mortality near to 10% per year, while that of asymptomatic severe aortic regurgitation is almost similar to that of age/sex matched population. 1998 AHA guidelines mentioned annual sudden death risk of only 0.2%, progression to asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction of less than 1.3% and chance of becoming symptomatic of less than 4.3% per year.
