Optical frequency domain imaging (OFDI)<\/span><\/h2>\n

Optical frequency domain imaging (OFDI) is a novel second generation optical coherence tomography (OCT)<\/span> derived imaging method [1]. It has substantially higher speed of image acquisition compared to first generation time domain OCT<\/span><\/span>. OFDI can allow rapid imaging for detection of coronary strut coverage with a much higher precision compared to intravascular ultrasound. Axial resolution of OFDI is in the range of 10-20 microns.<\/p>\n

OPINION trial compared optical frequency domain imaging vs. intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) in percutaneous coronary intervention [2]. It was a prospective, multicentre, randomised, active-controlled, non-inferiority study for head-to-head comparison of OFDI guided vs. IVUS guided percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with second generation drug eluting stent. Trial had a total of 829 patients randomized in 1:1 ratio. Primary endpoint was a composite of cardiac death, target vessel related myocardial infarction and ischemia driven target vessel revascularization within 1 year of PCI. Major secondary endpoint was angiographic binary restenosis at eight months.<\/p>\n

One year clinical outcome of ODFI guided PCI was shown to be non inferior to IVUS guided PCI and both techniques showed excellent angiographic and clinical results with low rates of 8 month angiographic binary restenosis.<\/p>\n
