It determines the aortic stiffness and is a surrogate of aortic atherosclerosis [1]. It has been correlated with the presence of carotid and coronary atherosclerosis and brachial artery endothelial function [2]. Increased thickness and stiffness of the arterial wall leads to increased arterial resistance. This in turn leads to decreased flow propagation velocity within the arterial lumen. Nice open access article [3] published under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License describing the method with the illustration shown here is available online. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To obtain a color M-mode echocardiogram of the descending aorta, patient is in supine position with neck extension. From the suprasternal window obtain color M-mode recordings of proximal descending thoracic aorta. Cursor is then placed parallel to the main flow of blood. Adjust the color Doppler Nyquist limit to ideally between 30-50 cm\/s.\u00a0In the image shown here Nyquist limit is -23.1cm\/s at the lower part of the colour bar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spatiotemporal velocity map\u00a0is created with M-mode with a recorder sweep speed of 100-200 mm\/s.This will display a flame-shaped color M-mode velocity map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the spatiotemporal map, locate and trace the velocity slope of the first aliasing contour. This is the path of the pressure pulse moving down the aorta. To calculate the velocity, choose two points on the velocity slope, one at the beginning and one at the end. Measure the distance between these two points along the axis of the aorta. Measure the time elapsed between these two points. Divide the distance by the time to get the velocity in cm\/s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calculation is automatically done by the echocardiograph once you choose the points. Here you can see the values displayed at the top right corner. Repeat this process at least three times and calculate the average value for the final aortic propagation velocity. The image shown here is from a person without coronary artery disease and value is in the normal range.
