VRLA battery for Ham Radio power
|VRLA or Valve Regulated Lead Acid batteries are also known as Sealed Lead Acid Battery and Sealed Maintenance Free (SMF). Certain precautions are needed for VRLA batteries, which do not have a vent, unlike in flooded lead acid battery. VRLA batteries can be mounted in any orientation. There are two types of VRLA batteries: Gel Battery, Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) battery.
The sample VRLA battery which I had shown initially has a flip off cover which can be opened to see the three cells inside. You may remember that standard lead acid battery cell has a voltage of 2 volts. So a 6 volts battery needs three cells in series. This 6V VRLA battery has exactly that, three cells and you can see three blue caps of the three cells here. You can see that everything is quite dry and there is no escape of liquid from the region of the caps.
