Can an Inverter AC Run on Battery?
Yes, you can run a standard DC Inverter AC on a battery system, but it requires a carefully sized, high-capacity power setup to sustain the continuous energy draw.
There is an important distinction to make first: standard residential “DC Inverter ACs” plug into standard 230V AC mains and use an internal circuit to convert that power into DC for the variable-speed compressor. To run this on batteries, you must use an external heavy-duty inverter. (True 48V DC Air Conditioners, which run directly off a battery bank without conversion loss, exist but are specialized equipment usually used for telecom towers or off-grid solar cabins).
Here is what is required to run a standard 1-Ton residential Inverter AC on battery backup:
- The Inverter: A minimum 3kVA to 5kVA Pure Sine Wave inverter is required. While inverter ACs do not have the massive startup surge of older non-inverter models, they still peak at 1000W–1200W during initial cooling.
- The Battery Chemistry: Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) is highly recommended over lead-acid (tubular) batteries. LiFePO4 can handle the heavy, rapid discharge rates required by an air conditioner without the severe voltage sag that causes lead-acid batteries to trip the inverter early.
- Capacity and Runtime: A 1-Ton inverter AC typically draws ~1000W while bringing the room down to temperature, then throttles down to ~300W–500W to maintain it. A 48V, 100Ah LiFePO4 battery bank holds roughly 4.8 kWh of energy. Factoring in a 10% conversion loss from the inverter, this bank will run the AC for roughly 4 to 6 hours—provided the room is already cool.
- Climate Impact: In a highly humid environment like in my region, an AC compressor must run at its maximum wattage for significantly longer just to strip the moisture out of the air before it can begin effectively dropping the ambient temperature. This initial dehumidification phase will drain a battery rapidly.
The most efficient way to utilize this setup is to cool the room using grid power (or daytime solar) first, and only switch to the battery bank to maintain the temperature once the compressor has throttled down to its lowest power draw.
