Real-Time QSO Manager (RTQM) From QRZ Revisited!

I had participated in the beta testing of Real-Time QSO Manager (RTQM) when it was initially launched. At that time the number of operators using it was quite low. Now it is available on the front page of QRZ.COM and when I checked just now, there were 724 users! That was a phenomenal increase at around 1800 IST which corresponds to grey line propagation in this region. It is likely that as night progresses in this region and more operators from US become active, this number is likely to increase. Clicked on to see the Live Map and there were plenty of spots there, though as expected, I could not see any from my region with relatively lower number of operators compared to Europe, USA, Japan and Indonesia.

The Real-Time QSO Manager (RTQM) map on QRZ has recently returned for public beta testing with several new features and updates. Here are the key highlights of how the updated RTQM functions:

  • Real-Time “I’m Here!” Spotting: Instead of relying on random cluster reports, RTQM acts as an active spotting network based on direct user input. Users post their mode, frequency, and grid location to place a pin on a global map.
  • Freshness & Expiration: To ensure propagation data is current, the pins automatically fade and expire after 30 minutes unless they are refreshed. You can refresh your own pin if you remain on the same frequency, and other operators who hear or work you can also refresh your marker.
  • Visual Indicators: The map utilizes a specific color key for different amateur band groupings, and icons vary based on the operating mode. As a session ages, the marker’s opacity fades to visually indicate the age of the spot.
  • QRZ Integration: The map runs directly through QRZ’s existing authentication system, meaning your session is tied to your QRZ profile and grid square.

By the time I finished writing this, I was happy to note that two spots popped up from my region! I switched on the radio and tuned 7130 kHz where VU2PLL was seen. I did not know that another surprise was waiting for me on the band. Listen to the QSO recording in full to know that!
