Did I Hear DX Station on ARISS with 40/10m Antenna?
|
Today evening I tried listening to a pass of International Space Station at around 3.15 pm (UTC+5.30) here with a 40/10m inverted V dipole antenna. Yesterday I had been able to hear and contact VU3BGK over ARISS with the same antenna. But it was a high elevation pass of about 60 degrees here. This one was a pass of around 25 degree elevation from South West to North East. I was not very lucky this time. Had closure of the open squelch in my IC 2730 radio a few times and heard one CQ call, but could not get the callsign. I had emailed the recorded audio clip to some of my friends and some time later VU3CDK came back with the reply that he was hearing ‘N’ and ‘D’ in addition to the CQ call, on repeated listening. He was kind enough to check with 4S7NDR to see whether it was him on the ARISS pass today evening.
To our pleasant surprise, 4S7NDR responded by mentioning that it was indeed him on the ARISS pass. As he was using his outdoor J-Pole, he does not have much luck with ARISS passes. He wanted to try, but did not hear anyone calling back. On one hand I was happy that I could pick up a nearby country with my 40/10m antenna, while on the other hand I missed an opportunity to contact a rare DX on LEO satellites. If I had opted to use my Moxon Yagi during that pass, as it was a 73 degree pass in his location, he might have heard my reply with his J-Pole antenna. We have several LEO satellite operators in our region who work ARISS with J-Pole antenna. 4S7NDR is hoping to make a Yagi antenna soon and we will be able to hear him loud and clear on most passes of ARISS as the distance is not too much between our regions. Here is the short audio clip which I could record during the ARISS pass. I agree, my RX was not great!
