|Elecraft KX2 Seems to be a Quite Popular Portable HF Radio!
Elecraft calls its KX2 a “stealth” transceiver! If you look at its size, you will know why it is so. It weighs only a little over one third of a kilogram and its size is 5.8 x 2.8 x 1.5 inches. It could be very well the smallest full-featured HF radio out there, covering 9 bands, giving a power output of 10 Watts. Elecraft KX2 can typically work 8 hours on a 2.6 AH Lithium Ion battery. The internal automatic antenna tuner can tune a random wire, dipole or whip antenna on multiple bands. This would make it a good radio for popular portable operations like Parks on the Air and Summits on the Air (SOTA) programs. Built-in mic permits operation like a hand held transceiver as well. There is no need for a personal computer for RTTY and PSK data modes as they are are also built-in.
Thus Elecraft KX2 is an 80 to 10 m SSB/CW/Data transceiver. Receiver part is a software defined radio (SDR). Elecraft KX2 can be connected to a KXPA100 amplifier from Elecracft to boost power output to 100 Watts. Computer control is feasible via supplied USB or RS232 cable. A new internal battery charger is also available as an add on option for convenience. N7RR has mentioned that it qualifies as an ultra light weigth HF radio for SOTA operations over multiple bands and modes. It has been mentioned that a new firmware update covering FM has enabled support for 10 m repeater operations, though we do not have any 10 m repeaters in this part of the world.
