Noise Reduction in Amateur Radio With AI!

Heavy band noise is a problem faced by all radio amateurs operating from the cities and some from rural areas as well. There is a huge and ever increasing list of sources for radiofrequency interference at home and outside. Earlier I had discussed about QRM elimination by antenna phasing and noise cancellation. Few days back I saw a post on QRZ forum about the use of Artificial Intelligence for noise reduction. Later I heard one VU friend mentioning about it on the air as well. He was experiencing a delay of a few milliseconds in reception when the cloud based AI program known as RM Noise was being used. That is because RM Noise client program sends the radio’s noisy output to the RM Noise servers to remove the noise in real-time and return the audio back to the client for listening.

RM Noise software can be downloaded from the website. Hardware needed is a computer running Windows 10 or 11 with internet access and the computer’s audio line in connected to the radio. After installing the program, username and password are required. Callsign is used as the username and the account has to be activated from the website. Program can be started from Windows Start menu and login is with username and password. Credentials will be saved after successful login. During successful operation, radio’s audio is routed to the cloudbased AI software and the output is received in the computer and one can hear it from the computer audio output device. If a particular noise cannot be eliminated, there is provision to record it and send it for analysis and potential resolution.
