I checked those frequencies in my radio, with no luck. I could not hear the station. But the presence of spots on multiple bands told me that it should a DXpedition and my search took me to the <a href=\"https:\/\/jarvisisland2024.com\/\">Jarvis Island DXpedition page<\/a>. It told me that today is the first day of the DXpedition and it will be there till August 19, 2024. So I have enough time to try my luck on multiple bands for possible contacts with my &#8216;100W and Wire&#8217; setup, though it is usually tough for me to work a DXpedition with their pileup and split operation. Yet I could work one from Bhutan some time back.<\/p>\n<p>Jarvis Island is an uninhabited coral island in the South Pacific Ocean with an area of just 4.5 sq km and is a territory of the United States. Interestingly the lagoon on Jarvis is dry, unlike most coral atolls. Local operating team at Jarvis Island has five operators: AA7JV, N1DG, HA7RY, KN4EEI and KO8SCA. The DXpedition pilots are AA1V, JH8JWF and CT1FPQ. Now what is the role of a pilot in a DXpedition? Pilots in addition to providing logistical support, provides real-time feedback for operational optimization. Some time back I had seen a post on X mentioning that an overseas ham wishing to know the current band schedule contacted the DXpedition pilot for information. DXpedition pilots are at different global locations, as you can see that the Jarvis DXpedition pilots are from United States, Japan and Portugal. A busy DXpedition team cannot accomodate requests on email and social media for more information. After having taken all the trouble to reach the spot and start operating, they should be concentrating exclusively on providing maximum number of contacts to the global ham radio community.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the local team of operators, I found it interesting to see two teams of remote operators. One team of remote CW operators from United States, Europe and Japan had 22 members. Another team of remote SuperFox FT8 operators from United States, Brazil, Europe, Japan and Australia had 24 members. <a href=\"https:\/\/wsjt.sourceforge.io\/SuperFox_User_Guide.pdf\">SuperFox mode<\/a> is a powerful new tool included in WSJT-X 2.7.0 that helps DXpeditions to make digital QSOs at very high rates. I did not go into further details of the mode as I am yet to start FT8 and other digital modes of operations. May be after I get bored with SSB operations which I have started only in January 2024, I might go to digital modes. As I had only AM and CW modes in my homebrew radio way back in 1985, I was unable to have SSB operations. Later on I could have FM operations when I bought a VHF radio and still later FM satellite opertions in 2023 when I bought a VHF\/UHF dual bander radio.<\/p>\n<p>Checked the\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/jarvisisland2024.com\/operating\/freq\">Frequency List of Jarvis Island DXpedition<\/a>. They have listed frequencies from 160 through 6m. SuperFox mode is available on all these bands. CW operation is available on all bands except 60m. SSB operations are not there on 160, 60, 30 and 6m bands. They have also mentioned that the frequency plan might change based on other DXpeditions and QRM encountered. That is one of the situations where the DXpedition pilots can help us in finding updated plans.<\/p>\n<p>Another interesting point which I noted was the RIB or Radio In a Box for DXpeditions. That is a complete station in a box and it can be remote controlled either locally via Ethernet or via a 900 MHz wireless link. It allows remote operation from a boat in places where there are restrictions for camping due to environmental or safety concerns. RIB was developed using funding by the Northern California DX Foundation and over two hundred thousand QSOs have taken place so far with 60% being by remote operators from around the world!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was watching the DX cluster spots on DXWATCH.COM, when I noticed several spots of N5J on multiple bands.
