Usually it is held during the 3rd full weekend in August and this year it is on 17th and 18th August, 2024. Though it is not a contest, each year there are over 500 lighthouse entries from over 40 countries. It is a popular event in VU land as well and we had teams participating last year as well. This year I have come<a href=\"https:\/\/johnsonstechworld.blogspot.com\/2024\/08\/international-light-houselight-ship.html\"> across two teams<\/a>, one at Mahabalipuram (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.qrz.com\/db\/AT2LHM\">AT2LHM<\/a>) and another at Betul Light House, Goa (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.qrz.com\/db\/AU2LH\">AU2LH<\/a>). I am looking forward to having contacts with them as both locations are in range for 40m for me usually.<\/p>\n<p>As it is not a contest, there are no prizes, it is free and there are only very few rules for ILLW event. Month of August has also been considered as the Lighthouse Month. In Britain, the Association of Lighthouse Keepers conducts International Lighthouse Heritage Weekend on the same weekend as the ILLW in August. Purpose of that celebration is to encourage lighthouse managers, keepers and owners to open their lighthouse or related visitor centers to the public for raising awareness. List of <a href=\"https:\/\/illw.net\/index.php\/entrants-list-2023\">amateur radio entries for 2023<\/a> is available at the website and has two entries from VU land AT2LH and AT5KLH. As I did not have an HF radio then, I had tried to work AT5KLH on LEO FM satellites, but could not establish a contact.<\/p>\n<p>Lighthouse activation does not mean activation from the top of the light house, which would have given excellent propagation on amateur radio bands! Field day type of setup either in the light house building or a building next to it is acceptable according to the guidelines. Obviously, operating permissions should be obtained from the relevant authorities. An interesting statement on the website is that lighthouses which have been moved to a museum for historic reasons are also permitted!
