Automatic Gain Control (AGC) &#8211; The Receiver side<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AGC is a feedback loop in the receiver that monitors the strength of the incoming signal. If a signal is very weak, the AGC increases the gain (amplification) so you can hear it. If a signal is very strong, the AGC reduces the gain so the audio doesn&#8217;t &#8220;blast&#8221; out of your speaker and distort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common Settings:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fast:<\/strong> Used for Morse Code (CW) or digital modes where signals start and stop abruptly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Slow:<\/strong> Best for Voice (SSB). It prevents the gain from &#8220;pumping&#8221; (rising and falling) between words or syllables, making the audio sound more natural.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Off:<\/strong> Generally avoided unless you are hunting for extremely weak signals and want to control the RF Gain manually.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Automatic Level Control (ALC) &#8211; The Transmitter side<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ALC is a safety circuit in the transmitter. It monitors the output of the power amplifier. If you speak too loudly into the microphone or turn your &#8220;Mic Gain&#8221; up too high, the ALC kicks in to reduce the drive level before it reaches the final stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why ALC matters:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Preventing Distortion:<\/strong> Without ALC, over-driving the transmitter would cause &#8220;clipping,&#8221; which creates a broad, messy signal that interferes with hams on nearby frequencies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Protecting the Amplifier:<\/strong> It prevents the &#8220;Finals&#8221; (output transistors) from being damaged by excessive power or high SWR (Standing Wave Ratio).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Digital Modes (FT8, etc.):<\/strong> In digital modes, hams often try to keep the ALC at <strong>zero<\/strong>.
