This keeps RF out of your shack and ensures your antenna radiation pattern stays true to the design. Using <strong>RG316<\/strong> on a proper ferrite core is an excellent choice for 400W, as it is high-temperature Teflon-insulated coax that can handle the heat. I have chosen 400W for the discussion as that is the legal limit for my class of license, though I do not have a 400W radio!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udee0\ufe0f Materials Required<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Toroid Core:<\/strong> An <strong>FT240-31<\/strong> or <strong>FT240-43<\/strong> (Type 31 is generally better for the lower HF bands like 40-160m; Type 43 is a great all-rounder).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Coaxial Cable:<\/strong> Approximately <strong>20\u201324 inches<\/strong> of RG316.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Enclosure:<\/strong> A weatherproof electrical box (e.g., a 4x4x2 PVC box).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hardware:<\/strong> Two SO-239 connectors (or one SO-239 and two stainless steel binding posts for wire antennas).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Extras:<\/strong> Heavy-duty zip ties, 3M glass cloth tape (optional, to protect the core).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\ude9c Step-by-Step Winding Instructions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Preparation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before winding, it is helpful to wrap the ferrite core in a layer of fiberglass tape. Ferrite can be abrasive, and this prevents the core from nicking the jacket of your RG316 over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. The &#8220;W1JR&#8221; Crossover Technique<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a 1:1 current balun, we use a crossover winding. This places the input and output on opposite sides of the toroid, providing better isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Start:<\/strong> Leave about 3 inches of lead and secure the coax to the toroid with a zip tie.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>First Half:<\/strong> Wind <strong>6 turns<\/strong> tightly around the core. Each time the coax passes through the center hole, it counts as one turn.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Crossover:<\/strong> After the 6th turn, instead of continuing in the same direction, cross the coax <strong>across the face of the core<\/strong> to the opposite side.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Second Half:<\/strong> Wind <strong>6 more turns<\/strong> in the opposite direction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Finish:<\/strong> You should have a total of <strong>12 turns<\/strong> (6 + 6). The &#8220;crossover&#8221; acts as a bridge, meaning your input and output leads are now 180\u00b0 apart.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Securing the Windings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use UV-rated zip ties at both ends of the coax to ensure the windings stay tight against the core. If the turns are loose, the impedance characteristics can shift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26a1 Termination and Assembly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once wound, you need to strip the ends of the RG316 to connect them to your hardware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Strip the Coax:<\/strong> Carefully remove the outer jacket, pull back the braid, and strip the inner dielectric to reveal the center conductor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Input Side:<\/strong> Solder the center conductor to the center pin of your <strong>SO-239 connector<\/strong>. Solder the braid to a ground lug attached to the connector body.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Output Side:<\/strong> \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>For Coax Out:<\/strong> Repeat the input process to a second SO-239.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>For Wire Out:<\/strong> Solder the center conductor to one stainless steel bolt (Antenna Leg A) and the braid to the other (Antenna Leg B).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd0d Why this works for 400W<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Core:<\/strong> The FT240 (2.4-inch diameter) is large enough that it won&#8217;t easily saturate at 400W PEP.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Wire:<\/strong> RG316 has a silver-plated copper-clad steel center and a PTFE (Teflon) dielectric. It is rated for significantly higher temperatures than standard RG58, making it safe for 400W even if the SWR is slightly high.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcdd Final Checklist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Check Continuity:<\/strong> Use a multimeter to ensure the center-to-center and braid-to-braid connections have zero ohms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Check Isolation:<\/strong> Ensure there is infinite resistance between the center conductor and the braid.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Weatherproofing:<\/strong> If mounting outdoors, ensure your enclosure has a small &#8220;weep hole&#8221; at the bottom to allow condensation to escape.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To give you the most accurate picture of your balun&#8217;s performance, we need to look at the <strong>common-mode impedance<\/strong> (Z<sub>S<\/sub>). For a 1:1 current balun, we want this value to be as high as possible &#8211; ideally above 2000 \u03a9 &#8211; to effectively &#8220;choke&#8221; off unwanted RF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The total impedance is a combination of inductive reactance (X<sub>L<\/sub>) and resistive loss (R<sub>S<\/sub>), expressed as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Z<sub>S<\/sub> = \u221a[(R<sub>S<\/sub>)<sup>2<\/sup> + (X<sub>L<\/sub>)<sup>2<\/sup>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Comparison: Type 31 vs. Type 43 Ferrite<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For 12 turns of RG316 on an FT240 size core, here is how the choking impedance generally stacks up across the bands:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><td><strong>Frequency<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>FT240-31 (12 Turns)<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>FT240-43 (12 Turns)<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Recommendation<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>1.8 MHz (160m)<\/strong><\/td><td>~1200 \u03a9<\/td><td>~400 \u03a9<\/td><td><strong>Type 31<\/strong> is much better for low end.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>7.0 MHz (40m)<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>~3500 \u03a9<\/strong><\/td><td>~2100 \u03a9<\/td><td><strong>Type 31<\/strong> is at its peak performance.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>14 MHz (20m)<\/strong><\/td><td>~3000 \u03a9<\/td><td><strong>~4200 \u03a9<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Type 43<\/strong> starts to take the lead.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>28 MHz (10m)<\/strong><\/td><td>~1100 \u03a9<\/td><td><strong>~2500 \u03a9<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Type 43<\/strong> maintains higher impedance.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Understanding the W1JR Crossover<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crossover isn&#8217;t just for neatness; it minimizes <strong>stray capacitance<\/strong> between the input and output turns. By crossing over to the other side of the toroid, you physically separate the high-voltage and low-voltage ends of the coil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thermal Considerations for 400W<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 400W, if your antenna is well-matched (SWR &lt; 2:1), the balun will stay cool. However, if you are using this with a non-resonant doublet and an antenna tuner, the common-mode currents can be much higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>RG316 Advantage:<\/strong> The Teflon dielectric won&#8217;t melt until it hits roughly <strong>200\u00b0C<\/strong>, whereas standard RG58 would fail at <strong>80\u00b0C<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The &#8220;Touch Test&#8221;:<\/strong> After a long transmission or a contest run, safely check the core temperature.
