Controlled feeder radiation usually points toward a <strong>G5RV<\/strong> or a <strong>ZS6BKW<\/strong> style antenna. Instead of using traps to &#8220;cut&#8221; the antenna to length electrically, these designs use a specific length of balanced feeder (ladder line) as a matching transformer. This allows the antenna to be resonant or easily matched on multiple bands while allowing the feedline itself to contribute\u2014in a controlled manner\u2014to the radiation pattern. I am using a homebrew ladder line with my 40m loop for multiple bands. The ZS6BKW style seems to be quite interesting, looking forward to your feedback before trying it out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Theory: Impedance Transformation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The &#8220;magic&#8221; happens in the <strong>matching section<\/strong>. On some bands, the antenna is a half-wave dipole; on others, it&#8217;s multiple half-waves. This creates wildly different impedances at the feedpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By using a specific length of 450\u03a9  or 300\u03a9 ladder line, the high or low impedance at the antenna is transformed to something close to 50\u03a9 at the end of the matching section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Non-Resonant Radiator:<\/strong> The wire elements are typically not a resonant length for any single band.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Standing Waves:<\/strong> We <em>want<\/em> standing waves on the ladder line because it is extremely low-loss compared to coax.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The 1:1 Current Balun:<\/strong> Vital at the transition from ladder line to coax to prevent RF from traveling down the outside of your coax and into the shack.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Build: The ZS6BKW (Optimized G5RV)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ZS6BKW is widely considered the superior &#8220;trap-free&#8221; multi-bander because it provides a near-perfect 50\u03a9 match on 40m, 20m, 17m, 12m, and 10m without a tuner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dimensions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Part<\/th><th>Length (Side 1)<\/th><th>Length (Side 2)<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Top Radiator <\/strong><\/td><td>13.75 meters<\/td><td>13.75 meters<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Matching Section (450 \u03a9)<\/strong><\/td><td>12.2 meters<\/td><td><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Construction Steps<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Center Insulator:<\/strong> Use a robust T-piece. Connect the two halves to the two conductors of the ladder line.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Ladder Line:<\/strong> Let this hang vertically. If it must turn, keep it at a 90-degree angle from the radiator and away from metal objects (gutters, towers).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Transition:<\/strong> At the bottom of the 12.2m ladder line, install a <strong>1:1 Current Balun<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Coax Run:<\/strong> From the balun, you can run high-quality 50\u03a9 coax (like RG-213 or LMR-400) to your rig.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why &#8220;Controlled&#8221; Radiation?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a standard dipole, we want the feeder to be &#8220;cold&#8221; (no RF). In these designs, the ladder line acts as a linear transformer. Because the system is balanced, the radiation from the two closely spaced wires of the ladder line cancels out <em>mostly<\/em>, but not entirely. This subtle radiation can sometimes &#8220;fill in&#8221; the nulls in the antenna\u2019s radiation pattern, making it a more effective all-rounder for DX and local contacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tuning and Troubleshooting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Height Matters:<\/strong> This antenna performs best when the center is at least 10\u201312 meters high.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SWR Check:<\/strong> If your SWR is high on 20m, the ladder line might be reacting to nearby metal.
