For a resonant inverted V dipole tuned to the 6-meter band, here are the calculated dimensions and construction details using <strong>2.5 mm<sup>2<\/sup> insulated copper wire<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Antenna Dimensions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because you are using insulated wire, the <strong>Velocity Factor (VF)<\/strong> will be slightly lower than bare copper, requiring the physical wire to be roughly 3\u20134% shorter. Additionally, the inverted V configuration typically lowers the resonant frequency compared to a flat dipole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><td><strong>Component<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Dimension (Metric)<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Dimension (Imperial)<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Total Length (1\/2 Wave)<\/strong><\/td><td>~2.78 Meters<\/td><td>9&#8242; 1.5&#8243;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Individual Leg Length<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>1.39 Meters<\/strong><\/td><td>4&#8242; 6.75&#8243;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Initial Cut Length<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>1.45 Meters<\/strong><\/td><td>4&#8242; 9&#8243;<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Note:<\/strong> Always start with the &#8220;Initial Cut Length&#8221; (1.45m per leg). This gives you extra wire to wrap around the insulators and allows for &#8220;pruning&#8221; to reach a perfect 1:1 SWR.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Construction Specifications<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Wire Type:<\/strong> 2.5 mm<sup>2<\/sup> insulated copper is excellent for this frequency. It is mechanically strong and can easily handle higher power.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Apex Angle:<\/strong> Aim for an interior angle between <strong>90\u00b0 and 120\u00b0<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A tighter angle (90\u00b0) lowers the feedpoint impedance closer to 50 Ohms, which often results in a better SWR match without a tuner.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A wider angle (120\u00b0) behaves more like a standard horizontal dipole.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Height:<\/strong> The apex should be at least <strong>3 to 5 meters<\/strong> (10\u201316 feet) above the ground for effective 6m propagation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Balun:<\/strong> Use a <strong>1:1 Current Balun<\/strong> (or an air-core &#8220;ugly balun&#8221; consisting of 5\u20136 turns of RG-58 coax on a 2-inch PVC form) at the feedpoint to prevent RF from traveling down the outside of the coax shield.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tuning and Optimization<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Mounting:<\/strong> Secure the center insulator to your mast and pull the legs out to your desired angle. Keep the ends of the wires at least 2 meters above the ground to minimize ground loss and detuning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Initial Measurement:<\/strong> Check the SWR. Most likely, the antenna will be slightly &#8220;long,&#8221; meaning the resonant frequency is lower than 50 MHz.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pruning:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the SWR is lower at 49 MHz, shorten both legs equally by 1\u20132 cm at a time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Do not cut the wire immediately.<\/strong> Fold the excess wire back on itself and twist it; this electrically &#8220;shortens&#8221; the wire while allowing you to let it back out if you over-tune.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Final Target:<\/strong> Aim for the lowest SWR. On 6 meters, the bandwidth of a dipole is relatively wide.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is my homebrew 6m dipole prior to mounting. I had soldered two elements directly to an SO239 connector. It was a really tough job to solder the outer connection to the SO239 base.
