Feeding Half-Wave Dipoles<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A resonant half-wave dipole in free space actually has a feedpoint impedance of roughly <strong>73 ohms<\/strong>, not 50 ohms. If you are stringing up a standard wire dipole for the 80m or 160m bands, 75-ohm coax is mathematically a <em>better<\/em> match at the feedpoint than 50-ohm cable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the antenna&#8217;s impedance closely matches the cable&#8217;s impedance, the SWR on the feedline remains practically 1:1, and the 1.5:1 mismatch only occurs right at the transmitter, where an ATU handles it easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Quarter-Wave Matching Transformers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can use a specific length of 75-ohm coax to match a 50-ohm feedline to a higher-impedance antenna (like a Delta Loop or a Quad, which sit around 100\u2013120 ohms).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A quarter-wavelength section of transmission line acts as an impedance transformer according to the formula:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Z<sub>0<\/sub> = \u221a(Z<sub>in<\/sub> x Z<sub>out<\/sub>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where Z<sub>0<\/sub> is the 75-ohm coax. If you connect your 50-ohm transmitter (Z<sub>in<\/sub>) to one end of a 75-ohm quarter-wave section, the other end will transform the impedance to exactly 112.5 ohms (75 = \u221a(50 x 112.5), providing a perfect match to loop antennas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Hardware &#8220;Gotchas&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you decide to use 75-ohm cable, you must navigate a few physical limitations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Aluminum Braid:<\/strong> Most modern RG-6 uses an aluminum foil shield and aluminum braid. <strong>You cannot solder aluminum with standard tin-lead solder.<\/strong> Do not attempt to solder a standard PL-259 (UHF connector) directly onto RG-6; the connection will eventually fail or corrode.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Connector Solution:<\/strong> The most reliable method is to use a high-quality, weatherproof <strong>compression F-connector<\/strong> designed specifically for RG-6.
