Unlike nuclear reactors, RTGs do not use nuclear fission or chain reactions. They rely purely on passive radioactive decay, making them incredibly stable, reliable, and entirely devoid of moving parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How It Works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An RTG generates power by exploiting the temperature difference between a hot radioactive fuel source and the cold environment outside the generator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Heat Source:<\/strong> The core of an RTG is a radioactive isotope\u2014most commonly <strong>Plutonium-238<\/strong>. As the isotope naturally decays, it emits alpha particles. When these particles collide with the surrounding material, their kinetic energy is converted into intense, constant heat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Thermocouples:<\/strong> The generator surrounds the fuel with specialized metal alloys called thermocouples. These are solid-state electrical devices made of two different conductive materials joined together.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Seebeck Effect:<\/strong> When one end of the thermocouple is heated by the glowing plutonium and the other end is cooled by the outside environment (like the freezing vacuum of space), the temperature difference forces electrons to flow from the hot side to the cold side. This creates a steady electrical current.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Heat Rejection:<\/strong> Metal fins on the outside of the RTG radiate excess heat away to maintain the cold side of the thermocouple. If both sides were to reach the same temperature, electricity generation would stop.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Are They Used?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RTGs are highly inefficient\u2014they typically convert only about 3% to 7% of their heat into electricity\u2014but they excel in reliability and extreme longevity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Decades of Power:<\/strong> Plutonium-238 has a half-life of 87.7 years. This means an RTG will still produce half of its original thermal power nearly a century after it is manufactured. The <em>Voyager 1<\/em> and <em>Voyager 2<\/em> probes, launched in 1977, are still communicating with Earth today using their original RTGs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>No Moving Parts:<\/strong> Because the energy conversion is entirely solid-state, there are no gears, pistons, or turbines to wear out, jam, or break.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Independence from the Sun:<\/strong> Solar panels become useless in deep space (beyond Jupiter) or in the dusty, light-obscured environments of the Martian surface.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Notable Applications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Deep Space Exploration:<\/strong> RTGs powered the <em>Cassini<\/em> mission to Saturn, the <em>New Horizons<\/em> probe to Pluto, and the <em>Galileo<\/em> mission to Jupiter. They currently power the <em>Curiosity<\/em> and <em>Perseverance<\/em> rovers on Mars.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Remote Terrestrial Use:<\/strong> The Soviet Union built hundreds of RTGs (using cheaper Strontium-90) to power uncrewed lighthouses and navigation beacons along the remote, freezing Arctic coast.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Early Medical Implants:<\/strong> In the 1970s, before modern lithium batteries were perfected, miniature RTGs were actually used to power some cardiac pacemakers.
