Designed to carry more than 100 metric tonnes (and up to 100 passengers) to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond, it represents a massive leap in spaceflight capability and reusability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Anatomy of the Vehicle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When fully stacked, the vehicle stands roughly <strong>121 to 124 meters (around 400 feet) tall<\/strong> and is 9 meters (30 feet) in diameter. It is composed of two fully reusable stainless-steel stages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Super Heavy (First Stage):<\/strong> The booster stage, powered by 33 Raptor engines burning sub-cooled liquid methane and liquid oxygen. It provides the initial thrust to get the vehicle out of the thickest part of the atmosphere. Super Heavy is designed to return to the launch site and be caught mid-air by the launch tower&#8217;s &#8220;chopsticks&#8221; (often referred to as Mechazilla) for rapid turnaround.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Starship (Upper Stage):<\/strong> The spacecraft itself, powered by a mix of sea-level and vacuum-optimized Raptor engines. Once in space, it functions as a standalone spacecraft for crew and cargo. It features a heat shield made of silica-based tiles to survive atmospheric reentry before flipping vertically to land.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Starship Matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starship is designed to make humanity a multi-planetary species while drastically lowering the cost of access to space. Its primary missions include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Artemis &amp; The Moon:<\/strong> Starship is slated to be the lunar lander for NASA&#8217;s Artemis program, returning astronauts to the lunar surface.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mars Colonization:<\/strong> The ultimate goal is to use fleets of Starships, refueled in Earth orbit by tanker variants, to transport massive amounts of cargo and humans to establish a self-sustaining colony on Mars.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Satellite Deployment:<\/strong> The massive payload bay allows for deploying large constellations of next-generation satellites, such as Starlink V3, or massive space telescopes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Point-to-Point Earth Travel:<\/strong> SpaceX has proposed using Starship to travel between any two points on Earth in under an hour.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Flight Test History &amp; Milestones<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of late 2026, SpaceX has launched Starship <strong>13 times<\/strong>, adopting an iterative &#8220;test, fly, fail, fix&#8221; approach. Early flights saw explosive ends, but the vehicle has rapidly matured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Flight 13 (July 24, 2026)<\/strong> marked several major firsts for the program:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>First Payload Deployment:<\/strong> Starship successfully deployed 20 satellites into orbit. This was a suborbital test flight. While Starship successfully released the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/launches\/starship-flight-13\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/launches\/starship-flight-13\">20 Starlink V3 satellites <\/a>and SpaceX engineers established communication with them, it was strictly a deployment demonstration.
