Rather than trying to pull in more signal, it exploits the earth itself as a massive filter against local interference. Here is the physics behind why a simple wire on the grass is so quiet:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. The Ground as an E-Field Absorber<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most local, man-made noise (QRM from switching power supplies, appliances, and power lines) arrives as near-field electric (E-field) energy. Because the earth is a lossy dielectric, laying the wire directly on the ground essentially short-circuits and absorbs this E-field energy. By sinking the antenna into the grass, you are hiding it from the highest-intensity noise sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, proximity to the ground cancels out the horizontally-polarized response, resulting in a primarily vertically-polarized response at low elevation angles\u2014ideal for DX skywave reception. The standard LoG is simply a perimeter of wire laid flat, usually in a square or circle, occupying a very small footprint compared to a full-wave dipole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Magnetic Field (H-Field) Dominance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Electromagnetic skywaves consist of both an electric (E) and magnetic (H) field. While the ground absorbs the E-field, a closed loop naturally responds to the magnetic (H-field) component of the wave. The magnetic field of incoming skywave signals passes through the lossy ground boundary with far less attenuation. Thus, the LoG &#8220;hears&#8221; the incoming skywave&#8217;s H-field while the local E-field noise is stripped away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Galvanic Isolation (The Secret Sauce)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The low-noise design entirely falls apart if the feedline is allowed to become part of the antenna. A LoG must be fed with an <strong>isolation transformer<\/strong> (often wound on a binocular core), not a standard voltage balun or unun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A typical LoG transformer uses separated primary and secondary windings to ensure no DC continuity exists between the coax and the antenna wire.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because there is no physical connection between the coax shield and the loop wire, common-mode noise traveling down the outside of the coax from your shack cannot enter the antenna circuit. The ground is allowed to &#8220;float&#8221; relative to the receiver, keeping digital hash and shack noise completely isolated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. SNR Trumps Absolute Gain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The LoG is a highly inefficient antenna. Its absolute gain often hovers between <strong>-20 dBi and -45 dBi<\/strong>. It attenuates <em>everything<\/em> heavily and is strictly for receive-only (transmitting into it would just heat up the dirt).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, modern receivers have more than enough gain to amplify a weak signal. The limit on HF reception is almost always the local noise floor, not receiver sensitivity. If the LoG attenuates the desired signal by 30 dB but attenuates the local noise floor by 45 dB, your effective Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) improves by 15 dB.
