It relies on a simple timer or microcontroller driving an H-bridge configuration of MOSFETs or IGBTs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Switching Logic:<\/strong> The transistors are switched fully on and fully off in three distinct states: positive voltage, zero voltage (a brief &#8220;dead time&#8221;), and negative voltage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Filtering:<\/strong> There is minimal to no output filtering. The raw, stepped square wave is fed directly to the load.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Result:<\/strong> Because the switches stay fully open or closed for relatively long periods, the circuit is cheap, highly efficient, and runs very cool. However, those sharp, vertical voltage transitions generate a massive amount of high-frequency odd harmonics. Just like an unfiltered linear amplifier, an MSW inverter will broadcast terrible wideband RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) that can easily raise the noise floor and wipe out reception on sensitive HF bands like 80m or 160m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pure Sine Wave (PSW) Circuit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A PSW circuit is significantly more complex, relying on Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM) and heavy inductive\/capacitive filtering to reconstruct a true curve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Switching Logic:<\/strong> Instead of simple on\/off states, the microcontroller drives the MOSFETs at a very high frequency (often 10 kHz to 20 kHz). It constantly varies the <em>width<\/em> of these rapid pulses. Wider pulses are used to build the peak of the wave, and narrower pulses are used near the zero-crossing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Filtering:<\/strong> The raw output of the H-bridge is a dense train of high-frequency square pulses. To create the final curve, the circuit requires a robust LC low-pass filter (a heavy inductor and capacitor network) in series with the output. Conceptually, this does exactly the same job as a low-pass ladder filter designed for an amateur radio transmitter\u2014it strips away the high-frequency SPWM carrier noise, leaving only the clean 50Hz or 60Hz fundamental frequency.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Result:<\/strong> The output is a smooth, continuous AC wave identical to grid power.
