This phenomenon is a freshly launched batch of SpaceX\u2019s Starlink internet satellites. Before they spread out to join the larger constellation, they travel together in a tight formation that looks like a string of pearls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Do They Look Like a Train?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SpaceX launches Starlink satellites in batches\u2014often 20 to 30 at a time on a single Falcon 9 rocket. Most recent launch was 26 Starlink V3 satellite from Starship Flight 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the rocket reaches low Earth orbit, it releases the satellites all at once. Because they are deployed at the same altitude and velocity, they initially drift together in a close, evenly spaced line.<sup><\/sup>Over the next few weeks, each satellite uses its onboard ion thrusters to raise its altitude and spread out into its final operational position, at which point the &#8220;train&#8221; dissolves and the satellites become much harder to see.<sup><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Key insight:<\/strong> The train is only visible because the satellites reflect sunlight. You can only see them during twilight (shortly after sunset or before sunrise) when your location on Earth is in darkness, but the satellites high above are still catching the sun&#8217;s rays.<sup><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Track and See a Train<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Witnessing a Starlink train is a matter of timing, as the window of visibility usually only lasts <strong>24 to 72 hours<\/strong> after a launch.<sup><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Check a tracker:<\/strong>Use websites like <strong>Find Starlink<\/strong>, <strong>Heavens-Above<\/strong>, or <strong>Azmth<\/strong>. You can enter your location, and they will tell you exactly when and where to look for recent launches.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Time it right:<\/strong>Look during twilight hours.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Find dark skies:<\/strong>Get away from city lights if possible, and look for a clear, unobstructed view of the sky.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Know what to look for:<\/strong>Unlike the International Space Station (which appears as one very bright, fast-moving dot), a Starlink train takes three to five minutes to cross the sky and looks like a distinct, evenly spaced chain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you\u2019ve seen a straight line of bright dots moving silently across the night sky, you\u2019ve likely spotted a Starlink train.
