But many may not know what Earthshine is! Earthshine is a faint glow that illuminates the dark portion of the Moon’s face. Historically known as “the old moon in the new moon’s arms,” this phenomenon allows you to see the entire lunar sphere even when only a tiny sliver is directly lit by the Sun.

How It Works

Earthshine is the result of a double reflection. While the bright crescent of the moon is illuminated by direct sunlight, the darker portion is illuminated by Earthlight.

The sequence works like this:

Sunlight hits the Earth.

The Earth’s surface (particularly its bright white clouds, ice, and oceans) reflects that light out into space.

This reflected light hits the dark side of the Moon.

The Moon reflects that faint light back to our eyes on Earth.

If you were standing on the Moon during Earthshine, you would see a spectacular, dazzling “Full Earth” in the sky, casting a bright glow over the lunar landscape.

When to See It

You cannot see Earthshine when the Moon is more than half-full because the glare from the sunlit portion is too bright, washing out the faint reflection. The best times to spot it are:

Waxing Crescent: 1 to 5 days after a New Moon, visible just after sunset in the western sky.

Waning Crescent: 1 to 5 days before a New Moon, visible just before sunrise in the eastern sky.

Key insight: Scientists actively monitor Earthshine to measure Earth’s albedo (reflectivity). If Earth has more cloud cover or ice, it reflects more light, making the Earthshine on the Moon noticeably brighter.

How do Earth’s clouds, oceans, and seasons affect the brightness of Earthshine?

Earthshine isn’t a constant, static glow. Because it is the reflection of light bouncing off our planet, its brightness changes dynamically based on what side of the Earth is facing the Moon and what the weather looks like down here.

Scientists track these changes by measuring Earth’s albedo—the fraction of sunlight that our planet reflects back into space. The average albedo of Earth is about 0.30 (meaning we reflect 30% of incoming sunlight), but this number fluctuates wildly based on clouds, oceans, and seasons.

Clouds: The Biggest Brightness Boost

Clouds are highly reflective. Thick, bright cloud cover acts like a massive mirror in the sky.

More clouds = Brighter Earthshine: When the side of the Earth facing the Moon is covered in massive storm systems or widespread cloud cover, Earth’s albedo spikes, casting a significantly brighter glow on the Moon.

Clear skies = Dimmer Earthshine: If the Moon is facing a relatively cloud-free expanse of the Pacific Ocean, Earthshine is noticeably fainter.

Oceans vs. Land: The Dark Zones

The surface of the Earth is mostly covered by oceans, which are terrible reflectors of light.

Oceans (Albedo ~0.06): Deep water absorbs sunlight rather than reflecting it. When the Pacific Ocean dominates the Earth’s moon-facing hemisphere, Earth’s reflectivity drops.

Land (Albedo ~0.10 to 0.40): Landmasses reflect more light than oceans, especially deserts (like the Sahara), which can reflect up to 40% of incoming light.

Ice and Snow (Albedo ~0.50 to 0.90): The ultimate reflectors. Fresh snow and sea ice can reflect up to 90% of sunlight.

Seasons: The Yearly Cycle

Because the Northern and Southern Hemispheres have different amounts of landmass, ice, and seasonal cloud cover, Earthshine changes predictably throughout the year:

Spring Peak: Earthshine is typically brightest during the Northern Hemisphere’s spring (April and May). During this time, the Northern Hemisphere still has significant snow cover, and there is an increase in thick cloud cover over the oceans, combining to create a highly reflective Earth.

Seasonal Sea Ice: The expansion and contraction of Arctic and Antarctic sea ice directly modulate the planet’s total reflectivity from month to month.

By monitoring Earthshine, climatologists can actually measure the total cloud cover and reflectivity of our planet without needing satellites—a critical metric for understanding how Earth’s climate is retaining or reflecting heat.

All of us are familiar with Sunshine.
