While ordinary waves are created by local winds and tend to be choppy and chaotic, swells are highly organized lines of energy capable of crossing entire oceans without losing much momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Swells Form and Travel<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Source:<\/strong> Swells begin as chaotic wind waves generated by severe offshore weather systems, such as hurricanes or intense low-pressure storms. The stronger the wind, the longer it blows, and the larger the area it covers (the fetch), the more energy gets transferred into the ocean.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Energy Transfer:<\/strong> The wind doesn&#8217;t just push water forward; it transfers energy that causes water molecules to move in a circular, orbital path beneath the surface. The water itself mostly stays in place while the wave energy travels through it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dispersion:<\/strong> As these waves move away from the storm, they undergo a sorting process called dispersion. Longer, faster waves outpace the shorter, slower ones.
