It happens during morning or evening twilight (just before sunrise or after sunset) when a rocket is launched from a dark ground-level environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While observers on the ground are standing in darkness, the rocket climbs high into the upper atmosphere. Because the air pressure at that altitude is extremely low, the rocket&#8217;s exhaust gases (primarily water vapor and carbon dioxide) are no longer compressed and rapidly expand outward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the rocket is so high up, this expanding exhaust plume catches the sunlight from below the horizon.<sup><\/sup>The sunlight illuminates the gases against the dark sky, creating a massive, brilliant cloud that looks exactly like a giant glowing jellyfish.<sup><\/sup>The sight is so striking that people who aren&#8217;t aware of a scheduled launch often mistake it for a comet, a UFO, or a mid-air explosion.<sup><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Physics of why rocket exhaust expands into a jellyfish shape at high altitudes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It all comes down to a battle of pressures: the pressure of the exhaust gas leaving the engine versus the ambient air pressure of the atmosphere outside. Fluid dynamicists call this phenomenon an <strong>under-expanded plume<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is exactly what happens as the rocket climbs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Sea Level (The Squeeze):<\/strong> Down on the launchpad, the Earth&#8217;s atmosphere is thick. The ambient air pressure is often higher than the pressure of the gas exiting the nozzle. This outside air pushes inward, squeezing the exhaust into a tight, narrow column.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>High Altitude (The Bloom):<\/strong> As the rocket reaches the upper atmosphere, the air becomes incredibly thin and ambient pressure drops to near zero. The exhaust gas, however, is still exiting the nozzle at extremely high pressure. With no outside air to push back and contain it, the gas immediately and violently expands outward in a wide radial arc as soon as it clears the nozzle lip.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The &#8220;Tentacles&#8221;:<\/strong> The gas wants to expand into a massive sphere, but the rocket is traveling forward at thousands of miles per hour. As the gas blooms outward, it is simultaneously left behind in the rocket&#8217;s wake.
