However, if you subject hydrogen to immense pressure\u2014millions of times the atmospheric pressure on Earth\u2014the molecules are crushed together so tightly that their covalent bonds break. The hydrogen atoms form a dense lattice, and their electrons are squeezed out to flow freely through the structure. This &#8220;sea of free electrons&#8221; is what gives a metal its ability to conduct electricity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where Does This Happen?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>In Nature:<\/strong> Liquid metallic hydrogen is one of the most abundant states of matter in our solar system. It makes up the vast oceans swirling deep inside gas giants like Jupiter and Saturn, where immense gravity creates the necessary pressure. As shown in the cross-section in the featured image, this deep metallic layer is what generates Jupiter&#8217;s massive magnetic field.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>On Earth:<\/strong> Scientists create microscopic amounts of metallic hydrogen in laboratories using a <strong>Diamond Anvil Cell<\/strong>\u2014a device that crushes a tiny sample of hydrogen between the tips of two flawless synthetic diamonds.
