Scheduled to launch on October 19, 2026 (October 20 in Japan Standard Time) aboard an H3 rocket, the mission is a major international collaboration involving NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), France’s CNES, and Germany’s DLR. Here is a breakdown of what the MMX mission entails and why it is so important:

Mission Timeline and Profile

Launch & Arrival:The spacecraft will launch from the Tanegashima Space Center in Japan and travel for about a year, arriving in the Martian system in August 2027.

Exploration:MMX will enter a quasi-satellite orbit around Phobos to conduct detailed observations, map its surface, and perform a flyby of Mars’ smaller moon, Deimos.A French-German rover named IDEFIX will be deployed to explore the surface and help select safe landing sites.

Sample Collection:The spacecraft will touch down twice on Phobos to collect at least 10 grams of surface and subsurface material. It uses two collection systems: a Japanese coring device that digs about 2 cm deep, and a NASA-supported pneumatic system (PlanetVac/P Sampler) that uses pressurized gas to blow material into a collection tube.

Return:MMX will depart the Martian system in 2030 and deliver the sample return capsule to Earth in 2031, landing in the Woomera region of Australia.

Why Phobos?

Scientists are eager to study Phobos and Deimos because their origins remain a major mystery in planetary science. There are two main theories:

Captured Asteroids:They might be ancient asteroids that wandered too close to Mars and were captured by its gravity.

Giant Impact Debris:They could have formed from the debris of a massive collision between Mars and another celestial body early in the Solar System’s history.

If the moons are captured asteroids, the samples should be rich in water and organic materials, offering clues about how the building blocks of life were distributed. If they are impact debris, they could contain pieces of ancient Mars itself, which would help us understand the planet’s geological history and whether it was once habitable.

How does the IDEFIX rover operate in the extremely low gravity of Phobos?

Operating a rover on Phobos is extremely challenging because the gravity is incredibly weak. While the IDEFIX rover has a mass of about 25 kg on Earth, it will weigh the equivalent of only 15 grams on the surface of Phobos. In this near-weightless environment, traditional driving would cause a vehicle to simply float away.

To overcome the extreme microgravity, the French-German (CNES/DLR) IDEFIX rover utilizes a highly specialized deployment and locomotion strategy:

Free-Fall Deployment and Bouncing: IDEFIX will not use retrorockets or parachutes to land. Instead, the main MMX spacecraft will simply drop it from a low altitude. Because of the low gravity, IDEFIX will likely tumble and bounce multiple times across the dusty surface before coming to a stop.

Autonomous Self-Righting: Because scientists cannot predict which side the rover will land on, its locomotion subsystem acts as a self-righting mechanism. IDEFIX has four articulating legs that unfold autonomously to push against the ground, flipping the rover upright into a driving position no matter how it initially lands.

Ultra-Light, High-Grip Wheels: Traditional heavy wheels would be counterproductive. IDEFIX features mesh-like wheels designed using topology optimization to be exceptionally light—weighing just 190 grams each.More importantly, each wheel is equipped with 9 blades (called “grousers”) that can dig into both hard rock and sandy regolith to maximize traction and prevent slipping.

Careful Roving: Movement on Phobos will be agonizingly slow to ensure the rover doesn’t accidentally launch itself off the surface. Over its planned 100-day mission, IDEFIX is only expected to drive a total distance of 10 to 100 meters.

By analyzing how its wheels interact with the surface and recording the depth of its tracks, IDEFIX will provide crucial data on the mechanical properties of Phobos’ regolith. This ensures the main MMX spacecraft can safely touch down to collect its samples later.

The Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) is a groundbreaking robotic space mission led by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) that aims to bring back the first-ever samples from Mars’ largest moon, Phobos.
