Unlike the turbojet engines you see on commercial airliners, ramjets and scramjets have no moving parts\u2014no rotating compressors or turbines. Instead, they rely on the sheer forward speed of the aircraft to &#8220;ram&#8221; air into the engine, compress it, and ignite it to produce thrust. Here is how each works and how they compare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Ramjet (Supersonic)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A ramjet operates efficiently at supersonic speeds, typically between Mach 3 (three times the speed of sound) and Mach 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How it works:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Intake &amp; Compression:<\/strong> As the aircraft flies at high speed, air is forced into the engine intake. The inlet&#8217;s shape is designed to create a series of shock waves that dramatically slow the incoming supersonic air down to subsonic speeds (below Mach 1) while simultaneously compressing it to high pressure and temperature.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Combustion:<\/strong> This highly compressed, subsonic air enters the combustion chamber. Fuel is injected and ignited, creating a massive expansion of hot gases.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Exhaust:<\/strong> The expanding gases are forced out of the back through a nozzle, accelerating back to supersonic speeds and generating forward thrust.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because a ramjet cannot generate its own static compression (it needs fast-moving air to work), a ramjet-powered vehicle cannot take off from a standstill on its own. It must be accelerated to supersonic speeds by another propulsion system, such as a traditional rocket booster or a carrier aircraft, before the ramjet can &#8220;turn on.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Scramjet (Hypersonic)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>Scramjet<\/strong> (Supersonic Combustion Ramjet) is an evolution of the ramjet designed for hypersonic flight, generally operating from Mach 5 up to Mach 15 or higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How it works:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Intake &amp; Compression:<\/strong> Like a ramjet, air is rammed into the engine. However, the intake geometry only slows the air down slightly. The air remains at <strong>supersonic<\/strong> speeds as it is compressed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Combustion:<\/strong> This is the critical difference. Fuel is injected and mixed with the air while the air is still traveling at supersonic speeds through the combustion chamber. Igniting fuel in a supersonic airstream is incredibly difficult\u2014aerospace engineers often compare it to trying to light a match in a hurricane.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Exhaust:<\/strong> The combusted gases exit the nozzle at extreme hypersonic velocities, generating immense thrust.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the air doesn&#8217;t have to be slowed down to subsonic speeds, a scramjet avoids the massive aerodynamic drag and extreme heat buildup that would physically melt a standard ramjet if it tried to fly at Mach 8.
