If we didn&#8217;t use codecs, streaming music over a cellular network, sending high-quality sound to Bluetooth headphones, or downloading a podcast to your phone would be incredibly slow and consume vast amounts of storage space and bandwidth. Codecs solve this by packaging the audio efficiently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is how two main categories of software codecs work:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Lossy Codecs (The &#8220;Good Enough&#8221; Approach)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lossy codecs compress audio by permanently deleting parts of the sound data that the human ear is unlikely to notice.
