For an amateur radio operator accustomed to working with 20-meter or 40-meter HF wavelengths, millimeter waves represent the far upper limit of the radio spectrum where wave propagation starts to resemble the behavior of visible light.

Here is why they are the foundation for 5G and the upcoming 6G networks:

Massive Bandwidth: Lower frequency bands (like VHF, UHF, and standard Wi-Fi) are heavily congested and only support narrow channel widths. The 30–300 GHz range is a vast, mostly empty highway, allowing for the ultra-wide channels required to push multi-gigabit data rates with near-zero latency.

Miniaturized Antennas: Because wavelength mathematically dictates antenna size, mmWave antennas are microscopic. This allows engineers to pack dozens of antenna elements into a tiny smartphone or base station footprint to perform beamforming—electronically steering and focusing a concentrated RF signal directly at a user rather than scattering it in all directions.

The Physics Trade-off

The ultra-high frequency of millimeter waves introduces severe propagation challenges:

Atmospheric Attenuation: mmWaves suffer from extreme path loss over distance. They are readily absorbed by atmospheric oxygen (which spikes specifically around 60 GHz) and water vapor (rain fade).

Poor Penetration: Unlike lower-frequency radio waves that easily pass through buildings, millimeter waves are easily blocked by brick walls, low-E glass, tree foliage, or even a person’s hand covering a smartphone’s antenna array.

To overcome this, mmWave cellular networks cannot rely on single, high-power towers covering miles of terrain. Instead, they require a dense grid of localized “small cell” nodes placed on streetlights, utility poles, and inside buildings to maintain direct line-of-sight connections.

Millimeter waves (mmWave) are high-frequency radio waves that sit exactly between microwaves and infrared light on the electromagnetic spectrum, operating in the 30 GHz to 300 GHz range.
