Many are attracted to the hobby due to press coverage of Ham Radio support during natural disasters when other modes of communications fail. Hand held equipment working on Very High Frequency or Ultra High Frequency can be used for short distance communications. High Frequencey bands are used for long distance communications. VHF and higher bands can also be used for satellite linked communications.
