I would miss the local contacts on 40 m including multiple nets which I enjoy, with poor performance on 40 m. I thought of elevating my EFHW using a nylon wire pulley like mechanism on to a galvanized iron pipe which I had been using for my <a href=\"https:\/\/johnsonfrancis.org\/techworld\/modified-inverted-v-40-m-antenna\/\">modified inverted V 40 antenna<\/a> which was dismantled for installing the EFHW. The feedpoint was left undisturbed and antenna wire about one and a half meters from the previous apex was just pulled up using a nylon wire passing through a make shift ring near the top of the GI pipe. Orientation of the remaining wire was changed a bit to be little more away from the house building. Free end also became a little more higher above the ground, may be about 10 feet at final position.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8393\" src=\"https:\/\/johnsonfrancis.org\/techworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/40-m-Improved-Did-20-m-Worsen-After-Elevating-End-Fed-Antenna.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1204\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/johnsonfrancis.org\/techworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/40-m-Improved-Did-20-m-Worsen-After-Elevating-End-Fed-Antenna.jpg 1204w, https:\/\/johnsonfrancis.org\/techworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/40-m-Improved-Did-20-m-Worsen-After-Elevating-End-Fed-Antenna-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/johnsonfrancis.org\/techworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/40-m-Improved-Did-20-m-Worsen-After-Elevating-End-Fed-Antenna-1024x574.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/johnsonfrancis.org\/techworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/40-m-Improved-Did-20-m-Worsen-After-Elevating-End-Fed-Antenna-768x431.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1204px) 100vw, 1204px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As I wished to have, the VSWR on 40 m did come down a bit, though not to ideal levels. But in the bargain, VSWR on 20 m rose a bit, which I did not wish to have as I do love working DX on 20 m. VSWR range from lower to upper end of band came down on 40 m from 2.25-1.4 to 2.0-1.2. That was indeed a welcome change. On air testing showed good performance. I could have comfortable contacts with stations to the East and South. A DX station at 3000 km to the East was heard well, though I did not get the chance to work him as the frequency belonged to another VU station.<\/p>\n<p>Interesting part was that a VU station from Kanyakumari, the Southern tip of the country was heard well when he was using just 2 W power output. He was still heard with a thin waterfall display when he reduced power to 1 W. May be salt water all around him at the tip of Indian peninsula, surrounded by Indian Ocean was enhancing his signals! He told me that he had been able to work stations from Canada and United States at just 3 W. That is the magic of salt water on three sides, almost like an Island!<\/p>\n<p>Coming to 20 m, it was a disappointment for me, especially as I do enjoy working a few DX on 20 m. VSWR range has gone up from 1.6-1 to 2.4-1.7 across the 20 m band from lower end to upper end. Still I could work an all time new VU station from New Delhi, which was about 2000 km North of my location. But it was difficult copy for the station at the other end, requiring multiple calls and repetitions, though I could hear him very well. VSWR tuned by the built-in automatic antenna tuner of the radio was near 1:1 across all bands. There was no change in the untuned VSWR on 15 m and 10 m, though I could not hear any stations at the time of testing, between 6.40 to 8.15 pm local time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Peformance of my End Fed Half Wave antenna was below par on 40 m, though I had 1:1 VSWR at the upper end of 20 m band.
