Packet radio digipeater on the International Space Station works on 145.825 MHz FM. Any 2m VHF FM radio will be able to receive this signal. Quarter wave ground plane antenna which has a high angle of radiation works better than large colinears as their radiation pattern is concentrated at the horizon. International Space Station is above 15 degrees elevation for most of a pass and hence an antenna with a high angle of radiation is better. When outdoors, a hand held 2m radio can receive the International Space Station with a quarter wave whip antenna.<\/p>\n<p>Pass time of International Space Station in your region can be obtained from the link: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.n2yo.com\/satellite\/?s=25544\">https:\/\/www.n2yo.com\/satellite\/?s=25544<\/a>. Packet radio contacts are usually originating from the earth stations using the Amateur Radio on International Space Station digipeater. If the specific equipment is not being used, only a special sound of the 1200 baud audio frequency shift keying (AFSK) signal will be heard from ARISS digipeater.<\/p>\n<p>During usual passes of International Space Station in my region, I am busy trying establish contacts with other radio amateurs through the voice repeater. Today I had the unique opportunity for trying to record APRS signals. The FM repeater was not functional after the last outage. I positioned my Moxon Yagi towards the middle of the pass as usual and started listening with my dual band IC 2730 radio. Doppler correction was done as displayed on the Argentinian Amsat webpage as I do while trying to access the FM repeater on board the International Space Station. Here you can see the initial frequency set in IC 2730 prior to the pass<\/p>\n<p>But as the APRS downlink was on VHF, the Doppler shift was less, starting about 5 kHz above the nominal frequency of 145.825 MHz at acquisition of signals and going down 5 kHz below by the time of loss of signals. This fast animation shows the change in azimuth, elevation, distance of the satellite and Doppler correction needed for frequencies. I recorded the audio signals using the voice recorder of my mobile phone kept over the speaker of the radio, with squelch open on VHF. I could hear the intermittent buzzing sounds when the APRS signals were received.
