As I was hearing of an end fed half wave vertical antenna for the first time, that too for 2m, I tried to learn more about GAWANT which was an abbreviation for Shinagawa Antenna! The GAWANT by F4FEY was with 1m whip and T37-17 toroid with 2\/4 winds. So that is an EFHW for 2m. But I am surprised about the HF GAWANT which I found at <a href=\"https:\/\/k1fm.us\/2020\/06\/the-gawant-antenna\/\">K1FM&#8217;s blog<\/a>. That was also quite short and does not come under my perception of &#8216;Half Wave&#8217;! There is a mention of Original GAWANT-II for 14-28 MHz with a rod antenna of 1.0-1.5m and GAWANT-7 for 7-14 MHz with 1.5m length. May be they are resonating on higher multiples of a fundamental 2m antenna, like the EFHW which I have, with a length of 20m, resonating for 40, 20, 15 and 10m? K1FM has mentioned that he got the details from JL1KLK, who is from Shinagawa! GAWANT designer was JF1QHZ from Shinagawa and <a href=\"https:\/\/jl1klk-blog51-fc2-com.translate.goog\/blog-entry-296.html?_x_tr_sl=ja&amp;_x_tr_tl=en&amp;_x_tr_hl=en-GB&amp;_x_tr_sch=http\">JL1KLK has thanked him in his blog post<\/a> for the handmade equipment.<\/p>\n<p>GAWANT is meant only for QRP operations, typically 5W, as we can presume because the tuning capacitor is a subminiature variable capacitor with polythene film as dielectric of 270-290 pF. We used to have it in our L-board transistor radios long back. As you are aware, with higher power, the spacing between the rotor and stator blades of the variable capacitor has to be much more and capacitors with air as dielectric would be better. We used to have it in our vacuum tube radios like my home Philips Prestige BC receiver which was my RX for ham radio and in my 3 x 807 CW\/AM QRO for 40\/80m, way back in 1987 or so. GAWANT is meant for portable operations and lower size confers definite advantage. Toroidal core for the matching transformer is T50-2. Primary winding is 2 turns of 28 AWG while secondary winding is 12 turns for GAWANT-II and 25 turns for GAWANT-7 of 0.4mm ultrafine enamelled copper wire. It is also possible to include a tap switch for the secondary winding to switch from high to low band with a single GAWANT. The tuning capacitor and coil are enclosed in plastic box, with antenna rod connected on one side and a BNC connector at the other side for fixing to a portable radio.
