From Flowers to Sweet Grapes: Fertilizer & Pruning Routine
Growing grapes in a tropical climate like Kerala is rewarding, but since our humidity is high and the “winter” is mild, your pruning and feeding schedule is the secret to a successful harvest. To transition your vines from just green leaves to heavy clusters of sweet grapes, follow this seasonal routine:
The Pruning Strategy
In Kerala, grapes typically need two major prunings per year to align with the dry and wet seasons.
- Foundation Pruning (April – May): Done after the summer harvest. Cut back the canes to 1–2 buds. This encourages vigorous vegetative growth during the monsoon.
- Fruit Pruning (October – November): This is the most critical step. As the rains subside, prune the matured “woody” canes.
- Leave 5 to 10 buds on each cane (depending on the variety).
- New shoots will emerge from these buds, carrying the flower primordia that become your grape clusters.
Fertilizer Schedule
Grapes are heavy feeders. Use a mix of organic and inorganic nutrients to balance vine health with fruit sweetness.
| Stage | Action | Recommended Nutrients |
| Post-Pruning | Kickstart growth | Apply Cow Dung Manure or Compost, mixed with Neem Cake. |
| Pre-Bloom | Support flowering | Add a handful of Bone Meal (for Phosphorus) and a small dose of NPK. |
| Fruit Set | Berry development | Apply Sulphate of Potash (0:0:50). Potassium is the key to sugar accumulation and “sweet” grapes. Wood ash is another good source for potassium, which can also be bought online |
Pro-Tip: In our region, avoid heavy Nitrogen (like Urea) once the tiny green grapes appear. Too much Nitrogen at this stage leads to watery, sour fruit and fungal issues.
Maintenance for Kerala Weather
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Reduce watering significantly once the grapes start changing color (veraison) to concentrate the sugars.
- Sunlight: Ensure your vines get at least 7–8 hours of direct sun. If they are shaded by larger garden trees like Jackfruit or Coconut, the fruit will stay sour.
