Growing Coriander in Pots at Home
Growing coriander (cilantro) in pots can be a bit of a challenge —one day it’s lush, the next it has wilted because the weather turned warm. However, with a few tactical adjustments, you can have a steady supply for your kitchen.
1. Preparation: Seeds and Soil
- The “Split” Trick: Coriander seeds are actually small husks containing two seeds. Gently crush them with a rolling pin or your hand to split the husk. This significantly improves germination rates.
- The Pot: Use a pot at least 8–10 inches deep. Coriander has a long taproot and hates being transplanted, so sow it directly into its “forever home.”
- Soil Mix: It needs excellent drainage. A mix of potting soil, compost, and a bit of perlite or river sand works best.
2. Sowing the Seeds
- Depth: Bury the split seeds about 0.5 inches deep.
- Spacing: Space them roughly 2 inches apart. You can sow them thickly if you plan to harvest “micro-cilantro,” but for full plants, they need breathing room.
- Patience: Expect sprouts in 7 to 14 days. If the seeds have been soaked overnight, there is a better sprouting rate.
3. The Tropical Care Routine
In warmer, humid climates, coriander thinks it’s summer and tries to flower immediately. To prevent this:
- Strategic Sunlight: While it loves sun, the harsh afternoon heat is its enemy. Place your pots where they get 4–5 hours of morning sun but stay in the shade during the peak heat of the day.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist. If the soil dries out completely, the plant panics and starts flowering. Mulching the top with a bit of dried leaves or coco-peat helps retain moisture.
- Airflow: In high-humidity areas, ensure the pots aren’t crowded together. Good airflow prevents fungal issues like powdery mildew.
4. Harvesting for Longevity
- Cut and Come Again: Start harvesting when the plant is about 6 inches tall. Take the outer leaves first, leaving the center to continue growing.
- Don’t Wait: Once the leaves start looking “feathery” or thin, the plant is about to bolt. Harvest the whole thing immediately.
