What message is this elephant foot yam giving?
This elephant foot yam is giving you a very clear message: “I am getting ready for harvest!”
Here is exactly what is happening in the container setup:
- Natural Senescence: The yellowing and drooping of the large, older canopy is a completely normal part of the yam’s life cycle as it reaches maturity. It is not a sign of disease or nutrient deficiency.
- Energy Transfer: The plant is currently shutting down its above-ground foliage and actively transferring all of its stored energy and nutrients down into the soil to bulk up the underground tuber (corm).
- Impending Dormancy: It is preparing to go into its natural dormant phase. The smaller green shoot near the base is likely a secondary offset, but the main plant is finishing its growing season.
What to do next:
Simply let nature take its course. You do not need to apply any fertilizer or increase watering right now.
Wait until the main stem completely dries up, withers, and eventually collapses or falls over. Once that happens, the tuber has absorbed all the nutrients it can and is fully mature—meaning it will be ready to unpot and harvest!
