Finally Located FT-710 DVI-D Monitor Specificity Reason at Yaesu Website!

I have been discussing with many on air and online regarding the issue of connecting DVI-D external monitor to my FT-710 radio.

I have been using a DVI-D monitor along with DVI-D cable for a couple of years now without any problem. Many suggested that using a DVI-D to HDMI cable or adapter can end up with a blown fuse in FT-710 while some mentioned that they had used it without a problem. If you have a blown fuse, the FT-710 radio will have to go back to the manufacturer for rectification, which is not an easy job in my region. Today I have come across the specifc information on the Yaesu website, which had been eluding me till now.

The downloadable pdf file clearly mentions: “The issue with connecting a non DVI-D to DVI-D monitor to your radio is your radio has a 150mA internal protection fuse that protect the main-board when a high voltage DVI-D to HDMI/VGA adapter is used. If this fuse is open it will require your radio to be returned to Yaesu for service.” This warning applies to FTDX101D/MP/10/ FT-710.

They have asked us to check if the converter voltage is correct and given the formula as well:

MAX converter Power Consumption/5 not greater then 150mA- example 700mW. 700/5=140mA

If you need to use HDMI monitor, the needed cables and adapters have also been mentioned, with links for purchase from Amazon. Converter for VGA has also been mentioned. My problem is that they will not ship to my region! Will need to get it from sources abroad.

Another useful information which I found online is that only passive cables should be used to prevent sending a voltage back to the radio. Powered adapters are likely to send a voltage back to the radio, causing a blown fuse if the current exceeds 150 mA.
