My HF Workhorse: FT-710 SDR Overview
My Yaesu FT-710 is a compact, high-performance SDR (Software Defined Radio) covering the HF and 50MHz bands. FT-710 is widely recognized for inheriting the advanced RF technology used in Yaesu’s top-tier FTDX series, offering exceptional receiver performance in a smaller footprint.
The radio is available in two primary versions, both delivering 100W of output power. Mine is Yaesu FT-710 AESS.
Yaesu FT-710 AESS
The Yaesu FT-710 AESS is the standard desktop configuration. It includes the SP-40 external speaker, which works in tandem with the radio’s internal speaker to create the Acoustic Enhanced Speaker System (AESS). This system uses digital signal processing to provide a more immersive and spatial audio experience, which can help reduce listener fatigue during long sessions or when trying to pull weak signals out of the noise.
Yaesu FT-710 Field
The Yaesu FT-710 Field is a streamlined version optimized for portable operations like POTA (Parks on the Air) or mobile setups. To keep the weight down and save space, it does not include the external SP-40 speaker. Instead, it comes with a carrying strap to make transportation easier. The internal hardware and performance specs are identical to the AESS version, making it a robust choice if you already use headphones or high-quality external speakers.
Key Technical Highlights
- SDR Architecture: It utilizes a direct sampling SDR design with a 250MHz High Resolution Direct Digital Synthesizer (HRDDS), providing a quiet receiver and a RMDR (Reciprocal Mixing Dynamic Range) of approximately 113 dB.
- Visual Interface: The 4.3-inch color TFT touchscreen features the 3DSS (3-Dimensional Spectrum Stream), which visualizes signal strength over time in a three-dimensional format, making it easier to spot weak stations.
- External Connectivity: A built-in DVI-D port allows you to connect a large external monitor, and a USB port supports mouse control for navigating the screen and adjusting filters directly.
- Digital Modes: It includes a dedicated “Preset” mode for FT8, which automatically configures the radio’s settings for digital operation, simplifying the setup process.
