What is the best time to try 80m band today?
For the 80m band (3.5 MHz) in my location today, the best window depends on whether one is looking for local Kerala/South India contacts or trying to reach further DX. Since the 80m band is heavily influenced by the D-layer of the ionosphere (which absorbs signals during the day), nighttime is the primary window.
1. The “Golden Hour”: Gray Line Propagation
- Best Time: Around 6:15 PM – 6:50 PM IST (Sunset in my place).
- Why: During the “Gray Line” (the transition between day and night), the D-layer disappears while the higher F-layer remains briefly ionized. This creates a “tunnel” effect that can allow for long-distance contacts with very low signal loss.
2. Local/Regional Ragchewing (NVIS)
- Best Time: 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM IST.
- Why: For communicating within Kerala or neighboring states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, the 80m band acts as NVIS (Near Vertical Incidence Skywave). Signals go straight up and bounce back down. This is the peak time for local nets.
3. Late Night DX
- Best Time: 12:00 AM – 4:00 AM IST.
- Why: As the atmosphere cools and noise levels (QRN) typically drop, you might find paths open to Europe or even Japan/Oceania.
