Why Should You Connect Battery First to MPPT Solar Charge Controller?

The battery must always be connected first before connecting the solar panels to an MPPT charge controller. That is what I have done here when I shifted my MPPT charge controller and battery from one location to another.

Why Connect the Battery First?

  • Voltage Reference: The MPPT controller needs the battery to act as a power source and voltage reference to boot up properly.
  • System Detection: It automatically detects your system voltage (such as 12V, 24V, or 48V) and configures its charging parameters based on the battery.
  • Prevents Damage: Connecting the solar panels first can send an unregulated, open-circuit voltage straight into the controller’s internal circuits without a load or reference, which can damage or fry the electronics.

Correct Connection Sequence

  1. Connect the Battery: Wire the battery to the MPPT controller’s battery terminals first (and turn on any battery breaker/fuse). Wait a few seconds for the controller to power on and recognize the system voltage.
  2. Connect the Solar Panels (PV): Wire the solar panels or array to the PV input terminals on the controller.
  3. Connect the Load (if applicable): Connect any DC load to the load terminals last.

Note: When disconnecting the system, do the exact reverse order—disconnect the solar panels first, and disconnect the battery last.
