World Amateur Radio Day: April 18, 2023

World Amateur Radio Day is celebrated every year on April 18. It is a global event covering all regions of the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU). It was on April 18, 1925 that IARU was formed in Paris with Hiram Percy Maxim as its first president. Hiram Percy Maxim was Co-Founder of American Radio Relay League (ARRL). This year, “Human Security for All, HS4A”, will be the theme of World Amateur Radio Day on 18 April 2023. United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security and the World Academy of Art and Science are partnering with IARU in the campaign to highlight the role that amateur radio plays in addressing the world’s most pressing needs.

Human security at the individual level is measured in economic, food, health, environmental, personal, community and political dimensions which are essential to an individual’s well being. Ham Radio (Amateur Radio) has demonstrated its ability to address human security needs in multiple instances. Special event website is operative at https://hs4a.iaru.org/. Special event stations operated by IARU member societies will be on the air to celebrate it during the two weeks centered on World Amateur Radio Day, 18 April 2023. Currently there are around 3 million Ham Radio operators worldwide.
