Five Hours or Less of Sleep Linked With Heart Attack!

A group of researchers from seven countries assessed the relation between reduced sleep and heart attack [1]. The research paper included data from 9 previously published studies. Total number of patients included in the studies was nearly 1.2 million, of which a little over 150 thousand had insomnia. Patients with insomnia had 1.69 times higher risk of development of heart attack. Patients who slept 5 hours or less had 1.38 times higher risk than those who slept 6 hours.

Insomnia was characterized as having any of the following symptoms: 1. Difficulty in initiating sleep 2. Difficulty maintaining sleep 3. Early morning awakening with inability to return to sleep. This was in accordance with the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM). Patients who slept 5 hours or less had 1.56 times higher risk than those who slept 7-8 hours.
